Rottweilers are generally robust dogs and are not difficult to care for them. Like all breeds, they are prone to a few hereditary disorders, which should be taken into consideration when breeding the dogs. The parent dogs should be tested for common hereditary diseases to avoid health problems in the puppies.

The Rottweiler tends to suffer from parvovirus. This condition has caused a lot of trouble of late, as a large number of Rottweilers have become affected recently. The dogs also may have hip problems. When buying the puppies, make sure the parent dogs are screened and have a good rating. Dietary problems are another concern in the breed. Most conditions, however, may be avoided by sticking to a thoroughly planned diet. Rottweilers are also prone to heart conditions, bloat, and cancer.

Since Rottweilers are highly energetic dogs, they need much exercise and should be walked daily for a few hours. As recommended, give the dogs a chance to run and play. This will not only help the pet keep fit, but also help it to avoid boredom. Keep in mind that bored dogs tend to be destructive and are not always obedient. Choose a place to walk the dog and take into consideration the local laws and regulations. Consider also the safety of the place for the dog.

Rottweilers have strong protective instincts and may not be good with other pets. They are also barkers that will warn you of intruders. To avoid excessive barking, train the dog from an early age.

As for grooming, this breed is one of the easiest breeds to maintain. The dogs have a short coat that is OK with regular brushing. Grooming once a week will remove the dead hairs and keep the dog's coat shiny. Rottweilers should be bathed when necessary.
